The morning after seeing my beautiful friends marry on the Central Coast of NSW, my sister and I departed my once home town, and caught the train to Sydney. Ugh! It’s so beautiful!

I love all the old little apartment blocks, and crusty nostalgic old buildings, and the way that they’re mixed with giant skyscrapers.

So we went and had a boozy lunch on the harbour.

This man in the image below cracked me up. I love that he’s utilised the harbour as a makeshift office, and is most likely scabbing free wifi – all whilst facing away from such a spectacular view.

You’ll notice an apparent lack of a header image.

That’s because at 2am in the morning, as I army crawled* my way into bed, I set my alarm, and then it hit me, the fact that I hadn’t taken a single fricking photo! All day! Not even one on my iphone. Not even with the lomo film camera that has taken up permanent residence within my handbag.

Can I just say, I am utterly crushed.

I will however, carry on. I am determined to complete this ridiculously time consuming personal project of mine – hook or by crook!

“Excuses?” You might well ask…

Well, I was sitting up at my computer working on one of my written assignments for university, and then I got distracted for a minute or two (actually a few hours, but who’s counting?).

I made this instead.

Anywho, I am absolutely determined to keep at this photo a day business. Of course you will appreciate the fact that a ‘photo a day’ project isn’t really just a photo per day. Often I take many many shots throughout my day, and then choose the best after some processing.

I will admit, it is stretching me a lot. More than I imagined it would. But I’ve learned so much so far about who I am as a photographer, and I feel as though I am beginning to find my voice in it all.

So there you have it.**

Having said all of that, you’ve probably picked up on the fact that I retain a strong degree of disdain toward posting a blog post without a beautiful photograph to accompany it. So I’d like to leave you with the image below.

It was captured whilst on a bus with my husband, in transit from Palm Beach to Hollywood in California. Late January, of 2011.

Although rather humble in composition, it remains one of my favourite photographs of mine ever. Their names were Bob and Julia, and as we were on the bus, Julia leant over to me, and politely tapped my arm. She asked if she could photograph me and my, “beautiful husband”.

Of course I said, “of course”, and she proceeded to pull out a disposable camera wrapped in aluminium foil from her bag.

Naturally, she let me take a photo of them.

For the duration of the bus ride, Julia continued to chatter on about this and that, whilst Bob listened attentively with that sweet and placid (albeit with a hint of sass) look on his face.

I love two things about this image:
1. It captures the nature of my experience of them perfectly.
2. All those quirky patterns and colours going on with their get-up, whilst still remaining completely coordinated with each other – sky blues, peachy tones, navy, and beige.

(*Actually, I probably was a much closer resemblance to a three-toed sloth trying to swim through a pool of pectin – rather than a highly trained army-man-machine. Who am I trying to kid?)

(** I did toy with the fact that I could just skip this post altogether… and simply continue on with 87/366. Would any of you even have noticed??)

Dog Town (Los Angeles – Part 1)

Hey, do you remember that time I was travelling overseas, and how I blogged about every place I visited?

Remember how I only ever ended up blogging from Tokyo – El Paso Texas?

Well, after El Paso, my husband Dana and I carried on our travels to our last stop in America – and our favourite stop in that country: Los Angeles.

We had such a wonderful time there!

As you may remember (if you are an older follower, or if you have read through my archives) out of our entire 7 week trip overseas, we only spend about 12 nights in typical accommodation (ie. hostels, resorts or hotels). The rest of the 37 nights we spend overseas were done so through a fantastic online community called ‘Couchsurfing‘.

It was in Los Angeles that Dana and I made a very lovely friend – Joe.

We had never met him before, but we had met his wife (who was then his fiancee) Lara earlier in our trip whilst in Nashville.

Joe agreed to host us in his apartment on Hollywood Blvd. for six whole nights. And I have got to say, it was one of the best times we had on our whole trip!

Anyway, I really don’t want to faff on too much, I really just want to share the photos with you! Because they’re really the best part.

Now, because we took positively way too many photos in LA, I’m going to post these photos up in a few different entries.

Today’s first LA post is about dogs.

Never before have I seen as many dogs in one city as I saw in LA.

Any time you’d walk down the street, there’d be people walking dogs.

I went to a hairdresser in LA, and there was a woman with her tiny dog in a tiny bag getting her hair blow dried.

It is as if in Los Angeles, people own dogs, instead of procreating (and that’s not such a bad thing)!

Here’s some of them:

little legs

exploration

shake

just. gotta. RUN.

sunning herself

oh to be free

poop

The last one cracks me up. Still. That dog walked up to us, had a sniff, and then paced about half a meter away from Joe (that is him in the blue jumper and track pants) he decided that was where he wanted to do his morning business.

Ha!

See you soon!

El Paso TX

In January this year, Dana and I boarded a dirty Greyhound bus to get from Austin Texas to Los Angeles California.

Collectively, the ride took over 37 hours. And honestly, it was probably one of the worst experiences of our travels overseas.

We boarded a bus that was already mostly full of people, as it was already en route from somewhere else. It was late at night, so any seats that were spare were sprawled across by bags and greasy food wrappers and legs. Dana and I walked all the way down to the back of the bus before we realised we weren’t going to get a seat together, and by that time, people had already piled in behind us, so we couldn’t try sitting closer to the front.

I sat next to a middle-aged lonely looking man. He was nice enough, and as morning broke, I made polite conversation with him. There was such a sadness in him that I couldn’t place.

Dana had to wake up two young women asleep on the back row of seats, and was showered with a storm of abuse and all of the bad words I know. One of them was heavily pregnant, and the other was very gaunt. They were both snorting cocaine on the back seat, and were selling it to other passengers at the rest stops.

The night was long and uncomfortable. Traveling on Greyhound is quite an experience. I realised that the bag I placed at my feet had about $4000 worth of camera and computer equipment, not to mention money and passports. So there’s not much sleep to be had.

Throughout the night, as we were nearing the Mexican border, we were pulled off the bus a couple of times by butch-o border security.

I felt like saying, “Yes sir, my Australian husband and I are travelling through Texas in the hope of being smuggled into Central America.” “What?! That’s not allowed??”

Anyway, I’m sure we indulged their secure-border-bravado by being very nice and polite instead.

When we arrived in El Paso, we were given a one hour stop over. As we stepped out of the bus, we were greeted by a stark winter sun, and as crusty as it was (and as scared as we were of being stabbed and raped and pillaged), we made the most of our visit. We walked through the town and we felt like we had hit a warp in the space/time continuum. Latino music was blaring through large street speakers, but the town was mostly scarce of people.

We found our way to a small restaurante and cowered in a booth. OhGodSOHungry. We were warmly greeted by a little man probably in his late sixties. He spoke only in Spanish, as did the menu.

I smiled and nodded, not having a clue what he was saying. And without thinking, I spouted the only words I could confidently say, “Pollo y frijoles, por favor señor.”

(Chicken and beans, please Sir.)

He smiled and patted me on the back and said something else in Spanish, to which I responded by laughing.

I even fooled Dana into thinking that I knew what he was saying to me.

By the time we finished our food, we had to sprint to get back to the bus terminal. Obviously we made it in time, but a word to the wise, if you scoff down a Coke, and a plate full of chicken and refried beans, try not to run immediately after.

A lovely flower arrangement at the terminal.

Austin, oh Austin

Hey Everyone, I’d like to write to apologise for having disappeared all week! On Monday, I was at home sick (as you will read below), so I took the opportunity to catch up on some blog loving. I was almost finished with the post below, and then… WHAMO! My internet completely cut out.

SAD. FACE.

I have been without it for almost a week now, and I still haven’t been able to fix it. I am currently typing on a pilfered laptop, with pilfered internet. Oh, how I long for the days of high speed ADSL. But at this point in time, I can only dream.

Anyway, today I am posting TWICE. Yep.

Here goes…

____________________________________________________________

Hello! I hope you all had a good weekend. Mine was great. Except I have managed to come down with a nasty chesty cough and have become a human yellow snot factory. (yum)

So, sadly, I am at home alone today to recover, while Dana is at my brother’s house looking after our niece Sydnee. I am bummed I have to miss out, but don’t want to pass on my disease to her!

So, me and Ginger (the bunny) have been hanging out today. She really likes eating pomegranate. I’ve finished a box of tissues, and last night I slept for 13 hours last night. Yeah, wow.

Anyway, do you remember how I started posting again about the rest of my overseas trip? In case you missed it, the last instalment is here.

So today’s post includes some fotos of me and Dana’s adventures in Austin, TX.

There were plenty of awesome second-hand clothing stores around, and heaps of cool bars and hangouts. Dana and I went and saw a college band play, ate yummy food, and even had our first ever lomo film roll developed.

Here’s some photographical evidence of aforementioned ‘good times’:

Dana and I went to the Spider House Cafe. We had sweet tea, nachos and beer. It was pretty good!

On our last day in Austin, Dana and I took a bus trip and made our way to some beautiful springs. The beautiful winter sun cast a glow on everything. It was very cold. It made our noses run.

These are the photos we took:

This is the last post about our trip through Austin. I do hope you liked it.

PS. I’d love to hear about you though – what are some places you have been that you really enjoyed visiting?
