A Springy Pic-a-nic

blossom

We’ve been having some pretty neat weather here in Adelaide lately.

To celebrate, my friends Nicola and Lauren hosted a little sunny Saturday afternoon picnic in their yard last week.

As a pre-requisite, everybody had to bring a plate to share, and wear a pretty dress. So I decided to bake some berry friands, and make some cucumber sandwiches, with the crusts cut off, of course!

I had a lazy snoozy sleep in with Dana, and then had a smoothie for breakfast after which I rode my bike to the grocery store to get ingredients to bake up a storm.

The sandwiches are pretty self explanatory, but, as for the friands, I followed this recipe that I blogged about a few weeks ago – except instead of using sugared edible flowers, I used raspberries and blackberries instead. THEY WERE SO YUM! Zomg…

Picked some flowers on my way home from the shops:

It was a beautiful afternoon! We sat under the tree, and stuffed our faces whilst giggling and talking about nothing much at all. And then a plumber turned up, who was then accosted with stupid questions and offerings of muffins. He was a little bashful… but who wouldn’t be? I’d definitely be scared of a bunch of giggly women if I didn’t know them!

In other news, Dana is away in Cairns at the moment – two of our dear friends are getting married! And, it turns out it ended up being half price for only one of us to go : O Who would’ve thought it?? So, being the benevolent lover that I am, I decided I would stay at home.

But it’s actually because I am starting a new job tomorrow! Wow, after a nine month break from working, I am feeling a happy mixture of nervesomgiamgonnapuke and excitement.

But, rest assured, the position is not full-time, so I will still have time to keep updating the happy haps here.

So, with Dana gone, I plan to sleep diagonally, catch up on lots of photo editing, and probably spend too much time on instagram. My. Goodness. I am addicted to that app! (my username is othersuchthings if you wanted to have a look!)

Anyway, I must be off, I have to paint my fingernails, wax the eyebrows, pack a lunch and pick out an outfit. All in lieu of tomorrow! Wish me luck!

Thrifty Thursday: Post # 7 – Plan Your own Veggie Garden

Thrifty Thursday – noun
Pronounced: Thrifty |ˈθriftē| Thursday |ˈθərzˌdā; -dē|
1. A day to which posts based on thriftiness are uploaded for your viewing pleasure, be it op-shop discoveries, crafty projects or yummy new recipes…

_________________________________________________

Oh wow, hasn’t it been a long time since I posted about thriftiness?? I soverymuchly wanted to post this yesterday (the real Thursday), but I was feeling quite unwell. So Dana set me up on the couch with some water, a blankie and a Bill Murray movie before he left for uni. And he banned me from ‘doing photos’. Fair enough. Plus, within about an hour of him leaving, I was fast asleep in a ball.

That’s not to say that I haven’t actually been thrifty though. I have gone on almost daily bike rides to places instead of driving, gone shopping in thrift stores multiple times per week for the past 6 months or so, and given haircuts to my friends and family.

I am very excited today. I am excited to the bone. I am so excited I have been doing a little hoppy dance around the house all morning (and yes, I am feeling much better).

This brochure is why I am so excited:

brochure

We received it in our letter box a couple of weeks ago, and since then, I have felt completely and utterly squeamishly excited.

I love hard rubbish, or recycled furniture, or scavenging, or kerbsite collections, or whatever you like to call them.

“Ohai, I am 70 years old and my husband and I no longer want all this awesome 1960′s furniture and home decor, and our grandson is lazy and won’t help us take it do donate to the Salvation Army. Oh, I know, let’s just leave it out for kerbside collection! Lucky we got this brochure in the mail!!”

Anyway, I am banking on the fact that because Adelaide has a relatively ageing population, there might be one or two kerbside scenarios akin to this one??

SO, needless to say, I have been working on a list of things to look out for in the neighbourhood this weekend.

Perhaps one day, I will post about all of the cool things we have found in hard rubbish over the years. A large percentage of our furniture has been found (and appreciated) as treasure on the side of the road.

One year, back when we lived in Brisbane, Dana and I found a Juice dispenser moulded to the shape of former Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke’s face! Now, if that’s not a golden win, then I don’t know what is! Needless to say, that red chipped paint in the background of the photos above is the top of a cool cabinet my sister and I found near our house on the side of the road.

One of the things listed is garden supplies. I’m looking for pots, tyres, buckets, metal drums, fence railing, etc etc, and any thing that might come in handy in building my new veggie garden.

I have been faffing on and on about making a new garden, but here’s some of my plans:

plans

I was given some beautiful gardening books for my birthday, which I have found to be completely, essentially helpful to me. I have absolutely no freaking idea about how to start my garden, and to be honest, I even feel a little bit nervous about it! Which is silly, I know.

I have been reading, One Magic Square by Lolo Houbein and Grow Vegetables by Alan Buckingham.

books

But, I am feeling much better about it all now. I (and every other poor sucker in my family) have been collecting toilet paper rolls so I can start sprouting some seeds before planting them, and it is all getting a little bit exciting really.

I just cannot wait for the day that I can prepare a fresh meal from ingredients that I have lovingly grown myself!

Do you garden? Have you ever grown your own vegetables or fruit or herbs?

Crispy Crackly Clear

The Setup

As I mentioned yesterday in my first Top Five post, Dana and I recently were able to put together the final pieces of our turntable set up. It includes a super cool old Bang & Olufsen stereo with crispy clear speakers, and our Thorens turntable.

We are more than a little excited!

One of the cool things about getting married to your best friend, is the fact that once you do, your music collection doubles! (Now, if that’s not a good reason to commit your entire life to somebody, then I don’t know what is!)

L O V E

So this morning, we were sifting through all of our stuff that we have in storage, in attempt to find some important paperwork that we need to complete some forms, but, as is abundantly apparent, we got a little distracted.

We ended up pulling out some of our record collection, and for the rest of the day, have been having a recordlisteningbonanza in the living room. Albeit, I did end up finding the paperwork I needed.

Listen

I am just so excited about this. Listening to this music makes me happy. That beautiful clear sound, warm and crackly. It’s kissing my ears, and oh, it is the best feeling!

Tonight Dana and I are going out for dinner with my brother and sister-in-law, David and Samantha. We’re trying an Afghani restaurant that I’ve never been to, but I hear is delicious.

Happy weekend to all you beautiful people.

Top Five Things to do

Jessica

Hello everyone! I’m starting something a bit new here. It’s called Top Fives.

Every so often, I will post a list of my personal top five things, in a given category.

The idea is that you can comment on these posts, with your top five in that category.

It’s my way of not only showing you more of my life, but getting to know you a little better too!

I hope you will participate, because it is actually really fun!

(I’m also open to suggestions for Top Five categories… so if you have a good idea for one, let me know.)

Today’s Top Five is:

My Top Five things to do (at the moment)…

1. Riding my bicycle

Oh, the gleeful feeling I get when the wind is whooshing past whilst I’m riding on a sunny day!

2. Blog whoring

I actually waste a lot of time surfing around the place, looking for pretty blogs with pretty pictures and interesting themes… and WHAMO – I’ve lost a whole day!

3. Op-shopping

Need I say more?

4. Listening to our vinyl collection

We have very recently finished setting up our new sound system for our turntable, and we are finally able to listen to all those delicious new vinyls that were purchased whilst on our trip overseas. YISS!

5. Gardening plans

Our little family here at home are about to start a veggie garden, and I have been reading up all about it. It is very exciting! I am looking forward to that day, when I go out into the backyard, and compose an entire meal out of things grown at my own house!

So, how about you? What are currently your top five favourite things to do?

x Jessica
